PDNYCD14 Asks Maloney to Support Impeachment Hearings for Cheney

On December 23, 2007, some ten members of Progressive Democrats of New York, Congressional District 14 (PDNYCD14) wrote to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney urging her to support impeachment hearings for Vice President Cheney. PDNYCD14 is a local chapter of Progressive Democrats of America.

Prompted by a letter that the Congresswoman had sent to one of their members regarding her stand on impeachment, the PDNYCD14 activists noted they were pleased that Maloney had voted against the motion to table HR 799 and had supported the motion to send it to the Judiciary Committee. “But you must be aware that Committee Chairman Conyers has announced his opposition to any impeachment effort, and --we understand--has the support of one of your New York delegation colleagues, Jerry Nadler. That doesn't bode well for any fair hearing,” the activists wrote.

The letter noted that Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) has just been joined by Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and two other members of the Judiciary Committee, Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), in calling on the Judiciary Committee to examine whether Vice President Cheney should be impeached. The PDA activists indicated they were encouraged by these actions and urged Maloney to join them or to fashion a new impeachment resolution if needed.

”We appreciate that you are “monitoring” the situation as a non-member of the Judiciary Committee and we urge you to do more,” they wrote. “We need you to lead in organizing a campaign that publicly calls for hearings to begin. If those hearings are not held, how will we explain to our children and grandchildren Congress's failure to assert its legal and moral authority and restore the checks and balances enshrined in our Constitution? If any member of the administration deserves to be ousted for high crimes and misdemeanors, it is the vice president.”

The activists concluded by asking Maloney to use her influence to see that fair and thorough hearings are held. “This is not the time to play politics and wait for the November elections. This is the time for the Democratic Party in Congress to lead, guided by its moral compass,” the letter concluded. The activists will pursue a meeting with Maloney to discuss the issue.
