...The accusations against Mr. Murtha were very old news, principally coming from defeated political rivals. Aligned against their charges are an official letter from Marine Corps Headquarters written nearly 40 years ago affirming Mr. Murtha's eligibility for his Purple Hearts - "you are entitled to the Purple Heart and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Purple Heart for wounds received in action" - and the strict tradition of the Marine Corps regarding awards.

Bush and the Republicans lie far more often than many of us realize. However, it's often difficult to convince others that they are lying because it's often difficult to find obvious examples. Of course, as we can see from the small, but growing number of submissions in this forum, as time goes on the gap between the truth and what Republicans claim is becoming pretty obvious.
Here are some methods commonly used...

1. The Big Lie
- This is an outrageous statement that few people believe at first, but that has an impact over time through repetition.
For example, "Hillary Clinton killed Vince Foster." Few people believe it, but the more often it gets repeated, the more people think Hillary is an evil conniving witch... even if they still think she didn't murder Vince. I know Hillary isn't popular with PDA, I'm not defending her policies, just demonstrating how the Big Lie works. Whatever we might think of her, she didn't murder her husband's best friend.

WASHINGTON - President Bush is making selective use of an opinion poll when he tells people that Iraqis are increasingly upbeat.

"Secondly, there are such things as roving wiretaps. Now, by the way, any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it requires -- a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so. It's important for our fellow citizens to understand, when you think Patriot Act, constitutional guarantees are in place when it comes to doing what is necessary to protect our homeland, because we value the Constitution."

On PBS' Newshour last week, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the following:

I was very careful. I never predicted any number of deaths or the cost or the length because I've looked at a lot of wars, and anyone who tries to do that is going to find themselves wrong, flat wrong ... I don't know anybody who had any reasonable expectations about the number or the length of the war or the cost of the war. I just don't - no one I know went out and said these are how those three metrics ought to be considered. And you can take it to the bank.

How can we have a civilized debate with a creature that lies so much? We can't believe any of their facts, and must insist on documentary evidence. Lying is infantile and shameful. This is a place to post evidence debunking blatent Republican lies.
